Helms described a specific challenge: when discussing clinical results in front of patients, he must communicate in a way the AI scribe can understand, which sometimes puts patients ill at ease. For example, if results demonstrate poor mobility or strength, the patient may assume their situation is hopeless. Additionally, having to communicate with both the patient and the AI scribe simultaneously can deteriorate the clinician-patient relationship by dividing the doctor's attention.

Not all physicians share Helms' concerns. Alexander Acosta, MD, a medical consultant at SonderCare, appreciates how the technology streamlines his workflow. He noted that the scribe can complete a full History of Present Illness (HPI) and evaluation in minutes, compared to the 20 minutes he would spend after each patient left the room. With faster documentation, he can spend more time with patients and less time on the screen.
The patient perspective also matters. In one anecdotal account, patients whose primary physician uses an AI scribe reported enjoying the ability to receive a transcript of their conversation immediately following their appointment, which frees them from taking notes and allows them to ask more in-depth questions.
