Why Nvidia's New Platform Is Turning Video Generation Into Real-Time Conversation

Richard Kerris, VP and General Manager of Media and Entertainment at Nvidia, explained that the path to instant video generation follows a clear progression: real-time rendering made simulation possible, simulation made generative AI possible, and now AI agents are turning the story itself into the interface.

Three months before Vera Rubin's launch, Runway's Gen-4.5 model could generate scenes in minutes. When accelerated by Vera Rubin, that same technology now generates them instantly. The speed change is not merely incremental; it fundamentally alters the creative process. Instead of waiting on a render farm to finish, a director gives new direction and new frames appear, the scene updating as fast as the idea arrives.

"Runway was able to bring their 4.5 software up in a day on Vera Rubin, and the results blew us all away. It was another milestone in the industry for real-time computer graphics with real-time generative AI," said Richard Kerris.

What Changes When Video Generation Becomes Instant?

The traditional film and advertising workflow moves through a relay of sequential handoffs: storyboard to wireframe to animatic, with each stage locking in the one before it. If a director discovers a problem at step six, the only solution is to disassemble the entire pipeline and start over. Kerris argues that AI dissolves this relay entirely.

With instant generation, the creative process becomes more fluid and exploratory. A director no longer needs to commit to decisions early in the pipeline; instead, they can move between stages, make changes, and watch the entire scene conform automatically. This transforms generation from a production bottleneck into what Kerris calls "a live creative loop, closer to conversation than production".

Steps to Rebuild Creative Workflows Around AI

How Can Studios Unlock Their Archive of Footage?

Beyond real-time generation, the same AI intelligence is turning studios' historical content into working material. Hundreds of exabytes of footage sit in archives that no search engine can reach. Universal Music Group (UMG), for example, holds billions of hours of content that, in Kerris's words, "no mere mortal" could ever manually sift through.

Nvidia's new partnership with UMG trains AI models on those archives so that someone can finally ask a question and receive relevant results. Instead of hiring teams to catalog and organize decades of footage, AI agents can understand the content and surface what's needed on demand. This transforms archives from static storage into dynamic creative resources.

The broader implication is that AI is becoming the connective tissue between all creative steps. "AI is now the pipeline. AI is underneath all of these different steps, and it understands all of the steps. So you can be at any one of them and go back to another one and make changes, and it'll all conform appropriately," Kerris explained.

For creative leaders, the message is clear: the bottleneck has shifted. It's no longer rendering speed or processing power; it's how quickly you can reimagine what's possible. When generation becomes instant, the limiting factor becomes human creativity itself. That's why Kerris returns to a principle from George Lucas, the filmmaker who pioneered many of the technologies that made modern cinema possible: story first, technology after. "He was one of the least technical persons you'd ever meet," Kerris noted, "but he had a vision and he would just challenge his team with that vision, and the technology would serve that story".
