Erik Voss, Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics and TESOL (Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages), leads the Language and Technology Research Group, a weekly gathering of about ten students who are developing marketable education technology ideas grounded in linguistic research. Rather than pursuing one-size-fits-all solutions, these students focus on personalized, customizable tools that reflect the actual needs and values of educators.
"We see that more personalized, customizable tools work better," said Voss, whose students are currently focusing on software that allows teachers to see how much students use artificial intelligence in their writing, and through that transparency, offer more relevant feedback.

This specificity represents a fundamental departure from how many education technology companies approach product development. Rather than assuming they know what schools need, these student entrepreneurs conduct research, develop beta versions, test the software with real users, and implement feedback before scaling.
How Are Students Translating Research Into Viable Startups?

Will Jordan-Cooley, who earned his Master's degree in 2014 through Teachers College's Technology, Media and Learning program, founded PangeaChat, a language learning application that is now approaching its tenth anniversary. The company has secured funding from the National Science Foundation's Small Business Innovation and Research program, demonstrating that education-focused technology can attract serious investment.
Jordan-Cooley's advice to aspiring education technology entrepreneurs reflects the philosophy embedded in Voss's program: prioritize educational value over technical novelty. "It's increasingly easier to make software, and the differentiator for software out there is the insight into the kinds of problems your software is solving," Jordan-Cooley stated. "You want some technical ability, and the TC programs do a pretty good job of that, but you should become a subject matter expert in your particular area of education and really focus on that."
