Why Wall Street Thinks AI Agents Will Make Blockchain the Next Big Infrastructure Play
Autonomous AI agents are already spending cryptocurrency to buy services, hire other agents, and pay for computing power without human approval, and major financial institutions now argue this machine-to-machine commerce will drive the next wave of blockchain adoption. Franklin Templeton's Sandy Kaul published a thesis arguing that agentic AI, not generative AI, represents the real infrastructure opportunity for investors. Unlike generative AI (which responds to prompts), agentic AI acts independently, creating thousands of micropayments per hour that traditional payment networks cannot handle efficiently.
What Makes Blockchain Better Than Credit Cards for AI Payments?
The problem with traditional payment rails becomes clear when you examine the economics of machine-to-machine transactions. Visa's network settles transactions in one to three business days, and credit card fees run 2 to 3 percent per transaction. When an AI agent needs to pay $0.001 for a single application programming interface (API) call, the fee alone would exceed the transaction value, making the entire exchange economically pointless.
Blockchain networks solve this by design. Public chains like Solana, Aptos, and BNB Chain settle transactions in seconds with fees measured in fractions of a cent. They operate continuously, require no permission to use, and allow software to hold and transfer value autonomously. This is exactly what AI agents need to move money at machine speed.
Visa and blockchain analytics firm Artemis published a joint report that validated this distinction. They broke agentic commerce into two categories:
- Macro-commerce: Human-directed purchases like booking travel or ordering goods, where credit cards work fine
- Micro-commerce: Sub-dollar, machine-to-machine payments where stablecoins are the natural fit

How Much AI Agent Commerce Is Actually Happening Right Now?
The infrastructure for AI agent payments is moving faster than many realize. The x402 protocol, an open payment standard developed by Coinbase and Cloudflare, had already processed 165 million transactions and $50 million in volume across 69,000 active AI agents by April 2026. The x402 Foundation now counts Google, Visa, AWS, Circle, and Anthropic among its members.
The x402 protocol works by embedding stablecoin payments directly into web requests. When an AI agent hits a paid endpoint, the server returns a price, the agent pays in USDC (a stablecoin), and retries the request with proof of payment. The entire cycle takes seconds with no human involvement.
What makes this significant is not just the transaction numbers, but who is building it. When Visa says stablecoins will power a new category of commerce, and the protocol is backed by the Linux Foundation with 22 institutional members, the technology has moved beyond the experimental phase.
How to Understand the AI-Blockchain Convergence

Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire pushed the thesis even further, arguing that AI and blockchain are not two separate trends converging but rather one technological shift. He explained that AI is driving the cost of knowledge work toward zero, while blockchain does the same for payments and coordination. When businesses rely on specialized AI agents, those agents become economic actors, buying services, hiring other agents, and exchanging value autonomously.

Allaire also suggested that software pricing could shift from subscriptions to pay-per-task models, with AI agents as both buyers and sellers. That increases demand for native tokens, since agents need them to pay network fees.
What Real-World Examples Show About AI Agent Commerce?
The infrastructure race is already underway. OKX recently launched a beta marketplace where AI agents can find jobs and pay each other. Coinbase's Base network already lets AI tools like ChatGPT execute live cryptocurrency trades. Robinhood launched its own AI-powered investing tools in May 2026.
According to a Bain and Company forecast cited by Franklin Templeton, AI agents could account for 15 to 25 percent of all U.S. e-commerce sales by 2030. If even a fraction of those transactions settle on blockchain networks, the demand implications for networks like Solana and Ethereum's layer-2 solutions could be substantial.
However, the gap between vision and reality remains significant. As of March 2026, x402's daily volume was just $28,000, with most of it from testing rather than production use. The narrative around agentic commerce is currently running ahead of actual adoption.
Still, the pattern mirrors how previous crypto cycles began. Decentralized finance (DeFi) had minimal usage before it became mainstream. Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) were dismissed as a joke before they gained traction. The difference this time is that institutional backing arrived before the mainstream adoption wave, not after.
Technical infrastructure for AI agent security is still maturing, regulatory questions around autonomous payments remain unanswered, and most AI agents today are still essentially advanced chatbots. But when a $1.8 trillion asset manager, the world's largest payment network, and the biggest cryptocurrency exchange all point in the same direction within the same month, it suggests the market may be underpricing what comes next.
