78% of B2B Websites Aren't Ready for AI Search. Here's What That Means for Your Business.

Most B2B websites that dominate traditional Google search are invisible to AI-powered answer engines. A new study of 50 B2B companies found that 78% scored poorly on readiness for AI search systems, even though they already rank prominently in conventional search results. This gap between traditional search visibility and AI search readiness represents a growing blind spot for businesses competing in the era of Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google's AI Overviews.

The research, published by DigiPuush, an Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) agency based in Bangalore, India, evaluated websites across 15 dimensions designed to measure how easily AI systems can discover, understand, extract, and cite information. The average readiness score across the sample was 37.9 out of 100, with a median of 40.9. None of the 50 websites analyzed reached the benchmark's "Strong" or "Very Strong" classification thresholds.

What Is Answer Engine Optimization, and Why Does It Matter?

Answer Engine Optimization differs fundamentally from traditional search engine optimization (SEO). While SEO focuses on helping websites rank in Google's list of blue links, AEO focuses on making information clear, extractable, and attributable to AI systems that generate direct answers to user questions. When you ask Perplexity "What is the best CRM for small businesses?" or ChatGPT "How do I implement payroll software?", the AI pulls information from multiple sources and synthesizes an answer. If your website's content isn't structured in a way the AI can easily understand and verify, you won't appear in that answer, even if you rank first in Google.

"Traditional search visibility and AI-search readiness are increasingly important areas to evaluate separately. A website can contain valuable information and perform well in conventional search while still making that information difficult for answer systems to extract, understand or attribute," said Anil Gorraladaku, Founder of DigiPuush.

The stakes are real. Research from Adobe found that AI-sourced traffic to retail sites converted 42% better than non-AI-sourced traffic, suggesting that visitors arriving through AI answers may be further along in their buying journey. Meanwhile, Similarweb's 2026 generative AI report found that more than 40% of U.S. searches now trigger an AI Overview, and users are 2.5 times more likely to visit a site after an AI mention.

Which Industries Are Most Vulnerable to This Visibility Gap?

The DigiPuush benchmark evaluated websites across five software and business-technology categories, and the readiness scores varied significantly. Accounting and ERP software companies performed best, with an average readiness score of 47.5. However, even this highest-performing category fell well short of strong readiness. Customer Support and Helpdesk Software scored the lowest at 31.8, followed by CRM Software at 30.5.

  • Accounting and ERP Software: Average readiness score of 47.5, the highest among categories studied.
  • Logistics and Fulfillment Software: Average readiness score of 40.0, indicating moderate weakness in AI search preparation.
  • HRMS and Payroll Software: Average readiness score of 39.8, showing similar challenges to logistics.
  • Customer Support and Helpdesk Software: Average readiness score of 31.8, indicating significant vulnerability to AI search visibility gaps.
  • CRM Software: Average readiness score of 30.5, the lowest-performing category in the benchmark.

The CRM and customer support categories face particular challenges because these are highly competitive markets where buyers frequently turn to AI systems to compare solutions, understand implementation requirements, and evaluate pricing. If your website doesn't appear in those AI-generated comparisons and recommendations, you're losing visibility at a critical moment in the customer journey.

What Are the 15 Dimensions of AI Search Readiness?

DigiPuush's framework evaluates websites across multiple factors that determine how well AI systems can work with their content. These dimensions include entity clarity (how clearly the company and its offerings are defined), product and service clarity, target audience clarity, answer-ready content (content structured to directly answer common questions), FAQ coverage, original research, citation quality, author and expert signals, first-party proof (customer testimonials, case studies), comparison content, topical depth, internal linking, structured extractability (how machine-readable the content is), entity consistency across pages, and content freshness.

The breadth of these dimensions reveals why traditional SEO success doesn't automatically translate to AI search readiness. A website might have excellent internal linking and fresh content but still fail if it lacks clear entity definitions, comparison content, or structured data that AI systems can parse. The benchmark was designed to make these gaps measurable and actionable.

How to Improve Your AI Search Readiness

  • Audit Your Current Visibility: Run the same customer questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini to see whether your brand appears, how it's positioned, which competitors appear instead, and which sources are cited. Record whether your brand is recommended or merely listed, and whether the answer is accurate.
  • Fix Clarity and Factual Gaps: If your brand is absent from AI answers, you likely have an authority or discoverability problem. If it appears inaccurately, you have a clarity problem. Create pages that directly answer recurring customer questions, improve your technical structure, and pursue credible media coverage to build authority.
  • Implement Structured Content: Use clear entity definitions, FAQ sections, comparison tables, original research, and author credentials to make your content easier for AI systems to extract and attribute. Ensure your website's code includes structured data that machines can read.
  • Monitor and Iterate Monthly: Rerun your prompt tests monthly to track whether your visibility in AI answers improves. This creates a feedback loop that helps you prioritize which readiness dimensions matter most for your specific category and audience.

The broader implication is that businesses can no longer rely solely on traditional SEO. The customer journey now includes multiple discovery surfaces, and AI-powered answer engines are becoming increasingly important. Companies that invest in AEO now, before the space becomes saturated, may gain a competitive advantage that lasts years.

As AI search continues to mature and capture more user attention, the gap between traditional search visibility and AI search readiness will likely widen. The 78% of B2B websites that currently score poorly on readiness face a choice: invest in AEO now, or risk becoming invisible in the next generation of search.
