AI Adoption Outpaces Teacher Confidence: Why 80% of Educators Use AI But Feel Less Ready Than Ever
Eighty percent of K-12 educators now incorporate artificial intelligence into their daily work, yet their confidence in using and teaching AI has stalled. This disconnect between adoption and readiness represents a critical challenge for schools as they navigate the AI revolution, according to findings from HMH's 12th Annual Educator Confidence Report, which surveyed 1,200 K-12 educators across the country.
Why Is Teacher Confidence Falling Behind AI Adoption?
The numbers tell a striking story. AI usage jumped 13 percentage points in a single year, climbing from 67% in 2025 to 80% in 2026. Yet the HMH AI Confidence Index, which measures how educators rate their own knowledge, skills, and comfort with AI, remained flat at 66.0, the same score as the previous year. This suggests educators are experimenting with AI tools without necessarily mastering them or understanding how to use them effectively in the classroom.
The gap reflects a broader pattern: adoption is outrunning readiness. Teachers are trying AI for lesson planning, differentiation, and communication, but many lack guidance on how to implement these tools strategically. This creates a situation where educators feel pressured to use AI without feeling equipped to do so well.
What's the Real Confidence Gap Educators Face?
A closer look at the data reveals an even more troubling disparity. While 87% of educators feel confident that their own AI use is instructionally effective, only 62% feel confident about what to teach students to prepare them for an AI-powered world. That 25-point gap is significant.
The distinction matters because it highlights two different skill sets. Teachers have largely figured out how to use AI for themselves, but they're struggling with AI literacy instruction, which involves helping students understand how these tools work, where they fall short, and how to use them responsibly. This is not a technology adoption problem; it's a pedagogy problem.

This perspective aligns with what educators themselves are saying. According to Cengage's 2026 Instructor Employability Research, 58% of instructors believe today's graduates are less prepared for work than students a decade ago, with faculty citing declines in critical thinking, communication, and resilience. At the same time, 70% say increased dependence on AI and technology is contributing to declining workforce preparedness, while more than half believe students need greater instruction on how to use AI responsibly and effectively.
What Are Educators Most Worried About?
Among educators who use AI, the top three concerns are student overdependence on AI tools, plagiarism, and a new worry this year: that AI will devalue human-led instruction. That third concern reveals something important about how educators view their role. It's not a logistics problem or a policy problem; it's a fundamental question about what AI is for in the classroom.
Educators aren't asking for more standalone AI tutors. They're asking for AI that's embedded in their curriculum and doesn't compete with the teacher-student relationship. This preference reflects a deeper understanding that the most effective learning happens when teachers notice when something is off, adjust mid-lesson, and make students feel genuinely seen.
How Can Schools Close the Confidence Gap?
The path forward requires schools and districts to shift their focus from simply getting more educators to try AI to giving them the guidance to use it well. Several practical steps can help:
- Distinguish Between AI Training and AI Literacy Instruction: Professional development should address both how teachers use AI for their own work and how they teach students to understand and use AI responsibly. These are two different skill sets that require different approaches.
- Embed AI in Curriculum Rather Than Standalone Tools: Schools should prioritize AI capabilities that integrate into existing courses and content rather than replacing teacher-led instruction. This keeps the teacher at the center of learning while leveraging AI as a support tool.
- Provide Actionable Insights Into Student Learning: Teachers need visibility into where students are struggling and why. Platforms that offer real-time feedback on student progress enable earlier intervention and more personalized support.
- Build Authentic Practice Opportunities: Students should practice communication, critical thinking, and responsible AI use in realistic contexts with AI-powered feedback, building confidence over time while developing career-ready skills.
Some higher education platforms are already moving in this direction. Cengage announced new capabilities across its Higher Education learning platforms that bring together AI-powered coaching, authentic learning experiences, and instructor insights into one connected experience. The approach includes a Student Assistant that provides contextual coaching grounded in course content rather than simply generating answers, and an Instructor Assistant that gives faculty deeper visibility into where students are struggling.
The results suggest this integrated approach works. Students who struggle early in a course and begin using Student Assistant are 90% more likely to continue submitting assignments through the end of the term, according to Cengage data. This fall, Student Assistant and Instructor Assistant will be available across more than 800 Higher Education products, expanding access to trusted, course-based AI that supports both student learning and instructor success.

Schools that focus on closing the confidence gap, providing meaningful professional development, and keeping teachers at the center of the learning experience are more likely to see AI enhance rather than diminish educational outcomes.
