The company has been methodically preparing Denver for autonomous vehicles. Waymo began creating high-definition maps of Denver in September 2025 with regular drivers behind the wheel, teaching the vehicles local traffic patterns, one-way streets, and hills. Earlier this summer, the company transitioned to fully autonomous testing, though only Waymo employees are currently permitted in the driverless vehicles.

What Makes Waymo's Denver Vehicles Different From Other Cities?

Waymo's sixth-generation minivan rolling out in Denver was specifically engineered for Colorado's challenging winter weather. The vehicle lacks cavities where ice and snow could accumulate, features tiny windshield wipers with exterior sensors, and includes heaters on the outside to melt away snowflakes. Despite being front-wheel drive, the van has "very good" traction control due to its substantial weight and ability to react quickly and precisely if it slides on icy roads.

The vehicles are equipped with an impressive array of technology designed to navigate complex urban environments. Each Waymo contains artificial intelligence, high-resolution cameras, advanced imaging radar, and high-tech lasers that enable rapid three-dimensional mapping of surroundings. The vehicles can detect and follow hand gestures from construction workers and street signs, allowing them to navigate active construction zones with ease.

  • Download the App: Potential riders can access the Waymo app to join the waiting list and request rides once the service launches, with pricing comparable to other ride-hailing services.
  • Customize Your Experience: Passengers can personalize their ride by displaying their initials on an LED screen atop the vehicle, adjusting temperature and lighting through touchscreens, and connecting to Spotify or other music platforms.
  • Request Accessibility Features: Visually impaired riders can request a specific jingle to play when the van arrives, while doors are equipped with braille and service animals are welcome aboard.
  • Monitor Your Route: Passengers can watch their journey unfold on GPS-like animated screens that show how the vehicle perceives the world, including dimensions of surrounding vehicles and detected road obstructions.

The vehicles have also been recently connected to Google's Gemini AI platform, allowing passengers to ask questions and receive information during their rides. Riders can ask the AI when Colorado became a state or request lists of nearby coffee shops, though the feature is still in beta testing.

How Safe Are Waymo Robotaxis Compared to Human Drivers?

Waymo has compiled an impressive safety record across its existing operations. According to the company, its vehicles have been involved in 16 times fewer serious-injury crashes, 5.6 times fewer crashes with airbag deployment, and 14 times fewer crashes with injuries to pedestrians compared to human drivers across 220 million rider-only miles.

While Waymos have been involved in hundreds of crashes in other cities, the company attributes its strong safety performance to advanced perception and decision-making systems. The vehicles use gesture-detection technology to follow instructions from people outside the vehicle, such as construction workers directing traffic. When a Waymo does get stuck, the vehicle is never remotely controlled; instead, remote employees provide additional information to help the vehicle decide how to proceed, and an in-person roadside assistance team is available for emergencies.

Waymo currently operates a commercial fleet of more than 3,500 vehicles across 11 cities, including Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, Orlando, Phoenix, San Antonio, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The company is laying groundwork to launch in at least 20 additional cities globally. In Denver specifically, Waymo has "dozens" of vehicles testing on streets, though the company declined to specify the exact number. As the user base grows, Waymo plans to scale up to "hundreds" of vehicles serving the city.

The arrival of Waymo in Denver represents a significant milestone for autonomous vehicle adoption in the United States. Colorado lawmakers approved the use of autonomous vehicles on state roads in 2017 as long as they follow traffic rules, and local governments are barred from prohibiting autonomous vehicles. This regulatory environment has enabled Waymo to conduct extensive testing and prepare for commercial operations without facing the legal barriers that have slowed autonomous vehicle deployment in some other states.
