As AI Enters Classrooms This Fall, Experts Say the Real Challenge Isn't the Technology,It's How We Use It

As students return to campus this fall, artificial intelligence is becoming a defining feature of modern education, but experts emphasize that success depends not on access to AI tools, but on using them thoughtfully, ethically, and in ways that strengthen rather than replace core learning. The challenge facing educators, parents, and students isn't whether AI belongs in classrooms,it's how to implement it responsibly.

What's Actually Changing in Classrooms This Fall?

AI is already being used to support a wide range of academic tasks, from brainstorming and writing to coding, data analysis, research, and problem-solving. At the same time, AI is fundamentally changing how students interact with course material and how educators design assignments and assessments. This shift is raising important questions about academic integrity, digital literacy, and responsible use of technology in learning environments.

The transformation extends beyond K-12 schools to higher education. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University's Human-Computer Interaction Institute presented cutting-edge work at the 2026 Festival of Learning in Seoul, where three co-located conferences focused on artificial intelligence in education, learning at scale, and educational data mining. The research highlighted new ways technology can help every student learn better, but also underscored the importance of getting the design right.

Why Not All Screen Time in Education Is Created Equal?

One of the most critical insights emerging from education research is that technology designed to maximize engagement produces very different outcomes than technology designed to maximize learning. This distinction is especially important for younger learners whose brains are still developing.

According to McGraw Hill's 2026 Global Education Insights Report, excessive screen time is viewed by educators as the single biggest obstacle to student success. Two in five educators report that students' ability to focus and manage their emotions has declined over the last five years, while 68% are concerned about student mental health, marking the top worry for the second year in a row.

Research increasingly suggests that excessive screen exposure during early childhood can affect the development of attention, working memory, and other executive functions that are foundational for learning. A 2025 study involving more than 1,000 preschool children found negative relationships between higher screen time and key self-regulation skills, including cognitive flexibility and verbal working memory. The researchers concluded that screen use for young children should be limited and focused on high-quality educational content.

How Should Schools Design AI Tools for Better Learning?

  • Focus on Scaffolding, Not Shortcuts: Technology should strengthen productive struggle and help students progress through challenges, not simply deliver answers that short-circuit the learning process. When AI scaffolds understanding at critical moments, it becomes a powerful learning tool.
  • Design for Age-Appropriate Engagement: Young learners benefit from short, carefully designed learning experiences in 10- to 15-minute sessions rather than extended screen time. Research shows that pedagogically-sound, age-appropriate technology in bite-size lessons can have outsized impact on learning outcomes.
  • Integrate AI Into Curriculum, Not General-Purpose Tools: Educators are 81% more likely to completely trust AI when it is integrated into existing courseware and curriculum environments designed specifically for education, rather than general-purpose chatbots or apps designed for engagement versus learning.
  • Support Independent Learning at Critical Moments: AI tutoring systems work best when they help learners think critically, deepen understanding, and get unstuck when they need additional support, particularly during hours when instructors are unavailable.

What Skills Do Students Need in an AI-Enabled Classroom?

As generative AI becomes more common in education, foundational skills are becoming increasingly important. Ramtin Zand, Computer Science Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina, emphasized that students need to evaluate information carefully, recognize bias, and verify sources. These skills are increasingly critical as AI-generated content becomes part of everyday academic work.

At Carnegie Mellon University, researchers are exploring how to ensure AI serves all students equitably. Vincent Aleven, a professor at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute, delivered the keynote address at the 2026 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education, focusing on how to harness AI's potential to improve learning outcomes.

"We can help the students who have further to go by developing new human-centered AI to create favorable conditions for learning with AI-based tutoring software. To do so, we might enlist more facilitators of learning,tutors, parents, caregivers, in addition to teachers,and create novel human-centered AI to help them help students, bringing care and accountability," explained Vincent Aleven.

What Role Should Parents Play?

For parents, AI in education brings both benefits and new considerations. AI-powered tools can offer personalized learning support, tutoring assistance, and improved academic efficiency. At the same time, families are being asked to better understand how these tools are used in classrooms and to reinforce expectations around academic honesty and responsible use.

The broader lesson from decades of research on technology in education is clear: educators are not rejecting technology. Instead, they are asking for a more thoughtful approach to it. The goal is to ensure that AI supports learning outcomes rather than replacing student effort or creating addictive patterns of engagement that undermine focus and mental health.

As students return to classrooms this fall, the conversation around AI in education is shifting from whether to use it to how to use it wisely. The research suggests that when AI is designed with learning science at its core, integrated into curriculum rather than replacing it, and used to support rather than replace human instruction, it can be a powerful tool for helping every student succeed.
