ChatGPT Now Shows Ads: What This Means for How You Search and Shop Online

OpenAI has started placing paid advertisements directly inside ChatGPT conversations, fundamentally changing how the AI assistant generates revenue while users ask questions and compare products. The company began testing ads at the start of 2026, introducing sponsored messages into the same conversations where hundreds of millions of people now seek answers instead of typing keywords into search boxes.

Why Are Ads Appearing in ChatGPT Now?

Running ChatGPT for hundreds of millions of users requires enormous computing power and continuous investment in infrastructure. OpenAI has stated that maintaining access to the service depends on securing funding to cover those costs. Currently, only a small portion of ChatGPT users pay for subscriptions, leaving monthly plans to fund only part of the service.

This financial pressure follows a pattern digital platforms have faced for decades. Google Search and social networks like Facebook built free services supported by advertising rather than charging every user directly. OpenAI is now following that same model, running ads alongside subscriptions while keeping sponsored messages clearly separated from ChatGPT's actual answers.

"The format is not a keyword-based buy, so it's different from traditional search," said David Dugan, OpenAI's head of global ads solutions.

How Do AI-Powered Ads Differ From Google Search Ads?

The biggest difference lies in how ChatGPT selects which ads to show. Traditional search engines like Google look at keywords, inferred intent, and advertiser landing pages to decide relevance. ChatGPT, however, receives a fuller picture of what the person actually wants as the conversation develops through follow-up questions.

When someone asks ChatGPT about buying a laptop, for example, the system learns whether they care most about price, processing power, battery life, or portability through their follow-up questions. That context allows ChatGPT's ad system to select sponsored messages that genuinely match what the person is looking for, not just what keywords they typed.

OpenAI says ads remain clearly labeled and separate from ChatGPT's response, so advertising does not become part of the answer itself. This separation protects user trust while giving the company another revenue stream without charging every user.

How Is AI Search Changing Shopping Behavior?

Consumer behavior has shifted dramatically. McKinsey reports that half of surveyed shoppers now seek out AI-powered search on purpose, where one written response can replace a full page of links. This change means fewer sources appear in front of customers, and a brand that AI cannot identify clearly may never enter the customer's consideration at all.

The buying journey itself is collapsing into a single conversation. Viant CEO Tim Vanderhook explained that AI commerce "collapses the 'search, click, checkout' funnel into a single, intelligent conversation," capturing how quickly a product question may develop into a buying decision.

A shopper might begin by describing a need, then narrow choices through follow-up details about price or preferred features. ChatGPT can then line up suitable products with current prices and key specifications, letting the shopper weigh options without hopping between retailer websites. Some products even support checkout inside ChatGPT, bringing purchase assistance into the same exchange.

How Should Brands Prepare for AI Advertising?

Marketers do not need every detail of AI advertising settled before they begin preparing for it. Google Ads executive Dan Taylor has warned that "search behavior has become more conversational and complex," giving teams a reason to examine how assistants describe their company before more customer decisions move through them.

  • Optimize Product Information: Accurate product information answers help the system identify what the company actually sells, while outside reporting confirms those details. Customer reviews then show how buyers describe the company after purchase, adding evidence the brand cannot produce on its own.
  • Build Generative Engine Optimization: Marketers call this practice AI search optimization or generative engine optimization (GEO), a growing focus on helping answer engines find companies and describe them accurately. None of that visibility is bought, and running an ad does not change whether a brand appears organically in the answer itself.
  • Track Attribution Carefully: Brands need a reliable way to connect early ad interactions with later sales. McKinsey points to accurate customer data and regular tracking as part of that process, giving marketing teams a clearer record of whether ChatGPT ads are actually leading to business.
  • Start With Small, Measured Campaigns: A brand can approach ChatGPT as a fresh paid channel rather than another version of Google Search, starting with small, measured campaigns even when the conversation suggests strong buying interest. Before spending grows, marketers need enough reporting and attribution to determine whether those campaigns are producing real conversions.

Forbes contributor TerDawn DeBoe argues that AI performance cannot be judged by last-click sales alone, since brand mentions and lead quality may reveal influence earlier in the customer journey.

What Risks Could Derail ChatGPT Ads?

OpenAI faces a delicate balancing act. E-marketer analyst Jeremy Goldman warned Reuters that users could move to rival chatbots if advertisements feel "clumsy or opportunistic," leaving little room for placements that distract from the help people came to receive.

OpenAI has responded by keeping sponsored messages separate from its answers, while its expanding pilot continues to test whether relevance can protect the user experience. Several competing AI companies remain cautious about advertising as they focus on trust and accuracy, suggesting no single model has won industry support.

The stakes are high. As AI search moves deeper into buying decisions and these systems begin acting on a customer's behalf, greater pressure falls on brands to provide accurate information before any paid placement appears. If ChatGPT's ads undermine user confidence in the answers themselves, the entire revenue model collapses.
