Robotaxis will become as common as traditional taxis within five years, according to James Peng, founder and CEO of Chinese autonomous driving firm Pony.ai. While Waymo has dominated robotaxi conversations in the United States, Chinese competitors are rapidly expanding internationally, signaling a major shift in how autonomous vehicle services will reshape urban transportation globally.

Peng made his forecast at the Fortune Leaders Forum in Macau, emphasizing that the core technological challenges have largely been solved. "I think the technology problem is pretty much already solved," he stated. "You'll be able to hail a robotaxi just like a normal taxi." This confidence reflects Pony.ai's existing commercial operations across major Chinese cities including Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Shanghai, where the service has already gained traction among diverse user groups.

In August, Pony.ai announced an expanded partnership with Uber to deploy more than 2,000 robotaxis across Europe and committed to bringing 200 robotaxis to South Korea by 2028. Most private cars sit idle for approximately 22 hours per day, used for only about two hours. If robotaxis become widespread, cities could reclaim vast amounts of parking space currently dedicated to stationary vehicles. "Most private cars are used for two hours a day. If robotaxis are more ubiquitous, we'll save on parking spaces. The implications will be profound. It will change the whole urban planning and change the way of our life," Peng explained.

WeRide and Baidu, two other major autonomous vehicle companies, are launching new ventures in Southeast Asia and Europe, indicating that this is not an isolated strategy but rather a coordinated push by the Chinese autonomous vehicle industry to establish global market presence.
