Cognition Acquires Dioxus Team to Supercharge Devin's AI Coding Capabilities

Cognition announced on September 10, 2026, that Jonathan Kelley and the entire Dioxus team are joining the company to advance Devin, its autonomous software engineering agent. The move combines expertise in app development and systems engineering with Cognition's AI-powered coding platform, while the team continues maintaining Dioxus and related open-source projects.

What Is Dioxus and Why Does Cognition Need It?

Dioxus is an open-source Rust framework that lets developers build full-stack web, desktop, and mobile applications from a single codebase. Rust is a programming language known for its safety and performance, and it has been gaining traction among developers building complex systems. Cognition said it used Dioxus extensively to build and improve Devin's performance, recognizing a natural fit when the two teams met.

The timing reflects a broader shift in the AI coding space. Kelley noted that late in 2025, large language models (LLMs), which are AI systems trained on vast amounts of text data, became very good at writing Rust code. This improvement stemmed from advances in reinforcement learning, a technique that trains AI systems through trial and error. As a result, Dioxus saw its download numbers surge as more developers picked up Rust and the framework to build their applications.

How Will the Dioxus Team Improve Devin?

The Dioxus team will focus on several technical areas to strengthen Devin's capabilities:

  • Virtual Machine Improvements: Enhancing the underlying infrastructure that allows Devin to run code safely and efficiently in isolated environments.
  • Computer Use Skills: Expanding Devin's ability to interact with software tools and interfaces the way a human engineer would, navigating applications and systems autonomously.
  • Testing Capabilities: Strengthening the automated testing features that verify whether code works correctly before deployment.

The team's technical foundation is particularly relevant here. Before joining Cognition, Dioxus Labs built SkyVM, a cloud coding harness engineered to support all major operating systems including macOS, iOS, Android, Linux variants, and Windows. The system includes custom virtualization technologies that enable secure virtual-machine snapshotting, forking, and rollbacks, allowing new virtual machines to spawn and resume in under 50 milliseconds.

What Happens to Dioxus and Other Open-Source Projects?

Both Cognition and Dioxus Labs committed to maintaining the open-source ecosystem. Cognition said it will continue supporting Dioxus, Blitz, Taffy, and Subsecond while increasing investments in Dioxus-Native and Blitz, a native HTML/CSS renderer. Dioxus Labs likewise pledged to keep working on these projects and maintain its wider array of open-source tools for the community.

"The team will invest heavily in Dioxus-Native and Blitz, its native HTML/CSS renderer," Kelley noted, adding that technologies like Blitz, Subsecond, wasm-split, and DX will do more in the hands of everyone rather than only developers who use Dioxus.

Kelley highlighted that Nico Burns, the team's lead engineer on Blitz, will be devoted full time to maintaining and improving Dioxus, and that Burns's productivity has increased substantially since joining Cognition, with development of Blitz, Taffy, and Parley accelerating. The announcement also noted that Cloudflare recently used Blitz as the core engine of its new agentic web browser, demonstrating the technology's real-world impact beyond the Dioxus ecosystem.

Why Did Dioxus Labs Make This Move?

The decision to join Cognition addresses a long-standing question about how Dioxus would eventually monetize. Kelley explained that the team collectively raised $3.5 million in venture funding from Y Combinator and Khosla Ventures, but joining Cognition gives the team the opportunity to continue developing Dioxus and Blitz without financial pressure while helping to shape the future of software engineering with Devin.

Kelley described the journey from side project during the pandemic to full-time venture-backed startup, noting that many people had wondered how the team would sustain itself long-term. Joining Cognition allows the team to take ideas it had for Dioxus, such as simplified cross-platform app development, rapid development speeds, and a reimagined software deployment system, and build them for all developers.

Cognition said that powered by Devin, it expects even more improvements in the Dioxus platform in the months to come. The acquisition represents a strategic bet that specialized expertise in systems engineering and app development will accelerate Devin's ability to handle complex, real-world coding tasks. Devin is described as the first autonomous software engineer, a system that plans, writes, tests, and ships production code on its own while working inside a customer's codebase and the tools the customer's team already uses. The company says Devin is deployed at some of the largest and most complex institutions in the world.

By acquiring a team with deep expertise in Rust and cross-platform development, Cognition is positioning Devin to handle increasingly sophisticated engineering challenges across diverse technology stacks and operating environments.
