How AI Search Engines Are Reshaping the Fintech Battlefield: Why Smaller Brands Are Winning

AI search engines are fundamentally changing how financial brands compete online, with newer challenger companies like SoFi outranking established giants like Bank of America across multiple visibility metrics. A comprehensive analysis of over 68,000 AI-generated answers across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude Sonnet 4, and Google AI Overviews reveals that artificial intelligence systems prioritize content relevance and clarity over the brand tenure and accumulated authority that traditionally dominated search rankings.

Why Are AI Search Engines Treating Challenger Brands Differently?

The shift stems from how AI systems evaluate information. Unlike traditional search engines that rely heavily on backlink history and domain authority, AI answer engines appear to weight content relevance, topical consistency, and clarity more heavily when generating responses. This fundamental difference in ranking logic creates an unexpected advantage for nimble, digital-first companies that may lack decades of accumulated web authority but excel at producing clear, focused content.

The data supporting this shift is striking. SoFi appeared in nearly 50% of relevant AI prompts about fintech topics, narrowly ahead of Bank of America. More tellingly, when AI platforms mentioned SoFi, they named it earlier in their answers than they named Bank of America. SoFi's average first-mention position was 3.75, compared with 6.07 for Bank of America. Additionally, AI answers framed SoFi more positively, with 61.8% of its mentions being favorable, versus 46.8% for Bank of America.

How Do Different AI Platforms Show Brands Differently?

The research uncovered significant differences in how various AI platforms surface brand information. Gemini named an average of 10 brands per response, compared with six for Perplexity. This density difference has real implications for brand visibility strategy. On a platform like Gemini, a brand competes for attention alongside nine others in the same answer. On Perplexity, the competitive field is narrower, making it easier for a single brand to stand out.

"The platform density patterns we uncovered in this study are valuable to strategists. Our previous research has shown that it's easier to earn visibility on Gemini. This study shows why: Gemini's answers just list more brands. That means there's real value in a platform like Perplexity, where you're one of six brands instead of one of ten," said Nikki Lam, VP of Earned Media at NP Digital.

These platform-specific patterns suggest that marketers cannot apply a one-size-fits-all strategy across AI search engines. The visibility dynamics differ substantially depending on which AI system users are querying.

Steps to Adapt Your Brand Strategy for AI Search Engines

  • Audit Your Content Clarity: Review your existing content to ensure it directly answers common questions about your products or services. AI systems prioritize clear, topically consistent information over brand name recognition, so focus on producing high-quality, focused answers rather than relying on brand authority alone.
  • Understand Platform-Specific Visibility: Recognize that different AI platforms surface brands at different densities. Research which AI systems your target audience uses most frequently, and tailor your content strategy accordingly. A brand that ranks well on Perplexity may need a different approach to gain visibility on Gemini.
  • Prioritize Relevance Over Authority: Unlike traditional search optimization, which rewards accumulated domain authority, AI search engines reward content that directly matches user intent. Ensure your content is highly relevant to specific fintech topics and user questions, rather than relying solely on your brand's historical web presence.

What Does This Mean for the Future of Digital Marketing?

The findings raise a fundamental question for marketers and brand strategists: is AI truly leveling the playing field between challenger brands and legacy incumbents? NP Digital's research suggests the answer is yes, at least in the fintech sector. The study analyzed answers from multiple leading AI platforms and found consistent patterns favoring content quality and relevance over brand age.

However, this shift comes with important caveats. While AI search may reduce the advantage of legacy brands, it also introduces new challenges. As AI companies increasingly integrate advertising into their platforms, questions are emerging about whether commercial incentives will eventually reshape how AI systems rank and present information. Perplexity, an AI-powered answer engine, tested sponsored conversations but discontinued the program, raising concerns about the impact of advertising on trust and neutrality.

The broader implication is clear: the rules of digital visibility are changing. Brands that have relied on accumulated domain authority and backlink profiles may find themselves at a disadvantage in an AI-driven search landscape. Conversely, challenger brands that produce clear, relevant, and topically consistent content have a genuine opportunity to compete on more equal footing with established players. For marketers, this represents both a threat to legacy strategies and an opportunity for nimble, content-focused competitors to gain ground in their industries.
