Human-Written Content Gets 6 Times More AI Citations Than AI-Generated Pages, New Study Shows
As artificial intelligence search engines become the primary way people find answers online, a critical divide is emerging: human-written content dominates AI citations while AI-generated pages struggle for visibility. A new study analyzing approximately 900,000 AI-generated answers found that the 25 most-cited human-written webpages earned 23% of all citations, compared with just 4% for the 25 most-cited AI-written pages.
Why Are AI Search Engines Citing Human Content So Much More Often?
The answer lies in what makes content valuable to artificial intelligence systems. AI search engines like Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google Gemini use a process called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), which retrieves relevant sources from the web and then synthesizes them into a direct answer with citations. The quality of those sources determines the quality of the final answer.
Brandi AI, the research firm that conducted the study, examined pages across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot during the second quarter of 2026. The researchers found that the most-cited human-written pages frequently included information that is difficult to reproduce with generic content generation, such as original research, proprietary data, firsthand experience, subject-matter expertise, expert analysis, and distinctive conclusions.

The performance gap is striking across every measurement threshold. The 25 most-cited human-written pages averaged 682 citations each, compared with just 119 citations for the top AI-written pages. Even among the highest-performing 1% of pages, human-written content captured 27% of all citations while AI-written pages captured less than 1%.
What Does This Mean for the "AI Slop" Problem?
The findings arrive amid growing concerns about "AI slop," the term for low-quality, mass-produced AI-generated content flooding the internet. A Pew Research analysis found that 10% of webpages showed significant signs of AI authorship, with that figure jumping to more than one-third among pages published after ChatGPT's release in late 2022. A May 2026 analysis of 55,400 English-language articles found that 49.9% of online articles published in the first quarter of 2026 were primarily AI-generated.
Despite this explosion of AI-written content, the Brandi AI study shows that volume alone does not translate to visibility in AI answers. The 250 most-cited human-written pages captured 51% of all citations, compared with just 10% for their AI-written counterparts. Among pages still receiving citations during the study's final month, human-written pages averaged 37% more citations per day than AI-written pages, at 1.80 versus 1.31.

- Create Distinctive Information: Avoid repeating what already exists online; instead, contribute something new, specific, or difficult to reproduce elsewhere.
For brands and publishers, the implications are significant. The traditional strategy of publishing more content to increase visibility no longer works in the age of AI search. Instead, organizations should use AI as a tool to improve research, organization, and structure while concentrating human expertise on creating genuinely original information.
This shift reflects a broader change in how AI search engines differ from traditional keyword-based search. Unlike Google or Bing, which rank documents by relevance signals like backlinks and on-page optimization, AI search engines synthesize information across multiple sources and cite the ones they find most authoritative and useful. That means a single high-quality, well-researched article can drive far more visibility than dozens of derivative pieces.
The research also highlights why citation quality matters for brand reputation in the AI era. When AI systems cite your content, they are essentially endorsing it as a reliable source.
