India's AI Data Center Boom Faces a Reality Check: Why Actual Capacity May Fall Far Short of Promises

India's data center industry is racing to build AI infrastructure, but a significant gap is emerging between what companies promise and what they can actually deliver. New capacity could reach 3-3.6 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, according to analysis from Axis Capital, but execution challenges and supply constraints may keep real operational capacity closer to 2.8 GW, well below the 6-8 GW targets publicly announced by industry players.

The stakes are enormous. India's installed data center capacity currently stands at around 1.3-1.4 GW, and the country is positioned to become a major hub for AI workloads as global tech giants expand beyond the United States. Hyperscalers like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, and Google are driving most of this growth, expected to account for roughly 90 percent of new data center demand by 2030, compared with their current 60 percent share.

What's Slowing Down India's Data Center Expansion?

The gap between ambition and reality stems from several interconnected challenges that are already visible in the market. Industry experts point to a constellation of bottlenecks that could delay projects by years, even as demand for AI infrastructure accelerates globally.

The momentum is real, though. Around 900 megawatts to 1.2 GW of capacity was awarded in the last six to seven months of 2026, according to Axis Capital's assessment. However, an award is fundamentally different from operational capacity. The time lag between securing a contract and flipping the switch on a functioning data center creates a persistent gap between what the industry announces and what actually comes online.

How Are Hyperscalers Reshaping India's Data Center Market?

The composition of India's data center market is undergoing a dramatic shift. Today, third-party colocation facilities account for the largest share at 60-65 percent of capacity, with hyperscaler captive or leased capacity representing 25-30 percent. Enterprise and edge data centers make up the remainder at 8-10 percent and 2-3 percent respectively.

By 2030, this picture will look radically different. Hyperscalers are expected to become the dominant force, driving 90 percent of new demand as they build out infrastructure for large language models (LLMs), AI training, and inference workloads. Enterprise demand, by contrast, is projected to remain broadly flat in absolute terms, meaning traditional corporate data center needs won't grow significantly.

This shift reflects a fundamental change in how computing infrastructure is being deployed globally. Rather than companies building their own data centers, they're increasingly relying on cloud providers who can achieve economies of scale and invest in cutting-edge cooling, power management, and AI-optimized hardware. For India, this means the country's data center future is being written by a handful of global technology giants.

What Does This Mean for India's Long-Term Infrastructure Opportunity?

Despite near-term execution challenges, the long-term opportunity remains substantial. If currently announced projects are fully realized, India's data center capacity could reach 7-8 GW by 2035, opening significant opportunities across multiple sectors.

The expansion will create demand across power generation and distribution, advanced cooling systems, backup infrastructure, construction services, and electrical equipment manufacturing. For India's economy, this represents a chance to capture value across the entire data center supply chain, not just in real estate and hosting services.

However, the gap between 2030 targets and realistic capacity highlights a critical lesson for policymakers and investors: ambitious announcements don't automatically translate into operational infrastructure. Success will depend on solving the power availability puzzle, streamlining permitting processes, and developing a robust domestic supply chain for specialized data center equipment. Without these foundational improvements, India risks falling behind other regions competing for hyperscaler investment.
