The relationship between Nvidia and SpaceX also signals confidence in a specific vision of AI's future: one where computing power is distributed across orbital infrastructure as well as ground-based data centers. This volatility has compressed Nvidia's paper gains even though the share count has not changed.

Despite the stock's recent weakness, SpaceX's AI division has been generating significant market enthusiasm. In mid-August, SpaceX's AI unit, SpaceXAI, released Grok 4.6, a large language model that the company claims delivers "frontier intelligence" at competitive pricing. The release triggered a 12 percent single-day gain in SpaceX stock, adding approximately $190 billion in market value. Musk indicated that Grok 4.7 would be ready in three to four weeks, with training complete and SpaceX company data being added in supplemental training.

However, the AI division remains unprofitable. In the second quarter, SpaceXAI generated $2.56 billion in revenue, up 247 percent year-over-year, but the unit lost $1.26 billion. The division consumed $15.83 billion of SpaceX's $18.4 billion in capital spending, representing 86 percent of the company's total capital budget for just 33 percent of its sales. SpaceX's connectivity business, primarily Starlink, covers these losses with $1.66 billion in operating profit.

Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas has argued that most investors currently "ascribe zero or even negative value" to SpaceX's AI arm due to its cash appetite. However, Jonas believes more than half of his $300 price target for SpaceX stock rests on the AI division's eventual profitability, with his bull case requiring AI to represent above 60 percent of the company's total value.

Nvidia's $21 billion stake effectively bets that Jonas is right. By locking in exclusive partnerships, securing significant GPU allocations, and maintaining a substantial equity position, Nvidia is wagering that SpaceX's AI infrastructure play will eventually justify the losses and capital intensity that currently characterize the business.
