One in Three Indian Banks Invisible to AI Assistants: The New Search Crisis

One in three Indian banking, financial services, and insurance companies are never named by AI assistants, according to the first sector-wide visibility study of its kind. Of 594 brands tracked across 32 categories, 187 received zero mentions from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, or Perplexity, even when customers asked the most common questions in their industries.

Why Are Household Names Disappearing From AI Answers?

The State of AI Visibility 2026 report, published by AI visibility firm Geology, analyzed more than 14,000 AI-generated answers to 4,222 questions about Indian financial services. The findings reveal a stark divide between brands that appear consistently in AI summaries and those that vanish entirely.

Consider travel insurance. When researchers asked the 50 most common questions Indian customers pose to AI assistants about travel coverage, three major insurers received zero mentions: New India Assurance, Oriental Insurance, and United India Insurance. Tata AIG, by contrast, appeared in 45 of the 50 answers. The pattern repeats across every financial category studied.

  • Banking: Punjab National Bank and Canara Bank appear in none of the top 50 credit card questions, while HDFC Bank shows up in 44
  • Payment Processing: BharatPe receives zero mentions in the 50 most common business payment questions, compared to Razorpay's 47 appearances
  • Stock Trading: Axis Direct is absent from all 50 stockbroking questions, while Zerodha appears in 47

This invisibility problem matters because it fundamentally changes how customers discover financial services. When an AI assistant summarizes options for a credit card or insurance product, it shapes which brands enter the customer's consideration set. Brands that don't appear in those summaries lose visibility regardless of their market position or Google search ranking.

What Changed: Why Google Rankings No Longer Guarantee AI Visibility?

The crisis stems from a structural shift in how people find information online. AI answer engines like Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and ChatGPT don't simply list search results; they synthesize information and cite specific sources. This means brands now compete not to rank, but to be cited.

A pharmaceutical marketer described the problem plainly: brands that held top-three Google rankings for regional queries about treatments and conditions report traffic eroding without any algorithm update. When the same queries run through major AI assistants, those traditional top-rankers are often absent from the summaries entirely. The AI cites competitors whose content is structured as direct question-and-answer pairs with condition-specific statistics.

The measurement gap compounds the problem. Traffic that once arrived through a blue link in Google results was traceable and attributable to specific campaigns. Traffic from AI citations arrives, if it arrives at all, through a mention inside an AI-generated summary that marketers cannot instrument or measure. The channel changed. The measurement infrastructure did not.

How to Improve Your Brand's AI Visibility

Brands responding to this shift are adopting a new optimization strategy called Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO. Unlike traditional search engine optimization, which focuses on ranking for keywords, AEO focuses on being cited by AI systems. Research from Trustpoint Xposure, the first AEO-certified PR agency in the United States, identifies five core signals that drive AI citation authority.

  • Google Knowledge Panel: A verified, authoritative panel that appears in Google search results and feeds into both Gemini and Google AI Overviews, generating measurable citation improvements within days of verification
  • Schema Markup: Structured data that makes content machine-readable, particularly FAQPage schema and sameAs declarations that signal entity consistency across the web
  • Editorial Coverage: Genuine placements in AI-recognized publications, not wire-distributed press releases, which Perplexity retrieves from live web sources and cites within days of publication
  • Wikipedia Presence: An established Wikipedia entry that serves as a foundational authority signal for language models
  • Entity Consistency: Uniform brand information across all web properties, ensuring AI systems recognize the brand as a single, authoritative entity

The speed of improvement varies by platform. Perplexity, which retrieves from live web sources at query time, shows the fastest response to certified AEO implementation. Measurable citation improvements appear within days to weeks of correct schema deployment. Gemini and Google AI Overviews, which draw on Google's knowledge graph, show improvements within days of verified Knowledge Panel generation. ChatGPT and Claude, which rely on model training data rather than live retrieval, show meaningful citation development within 60 to 90 days.

The Performance Gap Between Certified and Uncertified Approaches

Not all AEO strategies are equal. Trustpoint Xposure's analysis of more than 200 professional AI citation audits found a significant performance gap between brands using a documented five-signal methodology and those working with agencies claiming AEO without a certified standard.

Brands that engaged certified five-signal AEO methodology in the first quarter of 2026 now show AI search visibility scores averaging significantly higher than brands in the same professional categories that engaged uncertified AEO services over the same period. Fewer than 15 percent of brands working with uncertified AEO agencies showed meaningful AI visibility score improvements after their engagements concluded.

The most consistent finding across every comparison is the five-signal implementation gap. Brands audited after working with uncertified AEO agencies typically had missing signals: Google Knowledge Panels absent despite engagement, schema markup either absent or implemented without proper entity declarations, editorial coverage consisting of wire-distributed press releases rather than genuine placements, Wikipedia not assessed or pursued, and entity consistency not audited. Each missing signal is not simply an incremental gap; it is a foundational gap because the five signals interact and amplify each other when all five are present.

The window to claim unclaimed AI citation positions is closing at different rates across industries. The legal category continues to show the fastest position-claiming rate, with specific niche and geographic positions remaining unclaimed in approximately 68 percent of cases. The medical category continues to show the widest remaining first-mover window, with specific positions unclaimed in approximately 82 percent of cases despite representing the most severe correct citation gap of any professional category.

For Indian financial services brands currently invisible to AI assistants, the implication is clear: visibility in AI answers is becoming the price of entry for customer acquisition. Brands that treat AEO as a technical problem to solve next quarter risk falling further behind competitors who recognize it as a central strategic priority today.
