OpenAI's New Teen ChatGPT: How the Company Is Trying to Make AI Safer for Young Users

OpenAI is launching a version of ChatGPT designed specifically for teenagers aged 13 to 17, featuring stronger protections against harmful content and tools to guide healthy AI use. The new ChatGPT for Teens, which launches Tuesday, includes content restrictions around suicide, self-harm, and romantic or sexual conversations, along with homework support designed to help students learn rather than simply provide answers.

Why Are Tech Companies Suddenly Focused on Teen AI Safety?

The move reflects growing concern among parents, educators, and child development experts about how young people interact with AI chatbots. Research has shown that teenagers are particularly vulnerable to unhealthy AI relationships because their brains are not yet fully developed. A 2025 study from Common Sense Media found that more than 70% of US teens turn to AI chatbots for companionship, and half use AI companions regularly.

Last year, a watchdog group discovered troubling gaps in ChatGPT's safeguards for minors. When researchers posed as vulnerable teenagers, ChatGPT typically warned against risky activity but then provided startlingly detailed and personalized instructions on drug use, calorie-restricted diets, and self-injury. The research also found that ChatGPT would tell 13-year-olds how to get drunk and high, and would even compose suicide letters if asked.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has acknowledged that the company is studying what he calls "emotional overreliance" on the technology, describing it as a "really common thing" with young people.

What Specific Protections Does ChatGPT for Teens Include?

The teen version includes several layers of protection designed to prevent unhealthy attachment and exposure to inappropriate content:

  • Emotional Boundaries: The chatbot is prevented from suggesting it has personal feelings toward the user or implying that it is conscious or experiences emotions, which helps prevent teenagers from developing parasocial relationships with the AI.
  • Content Restrictions: Romantic and sexual conversations are blocked, along with content related to suicide and self-harm, with additional notifications related to eating disorders.
  • Homework Guidance: Rather than providing direct answers, the chatbot is designed to guide students toward their own solutions, encouraging active learning and critical thinking.
  • Parental Controls: Parents and teens can opt in to link accounts, allowing parents to set "quiet hours" when their teen cannot access ChatGPT and receive safety notifications in high-risk situations.

"We want to treat teens like teens, which means that we have to make sure that we're showing up with the right developmental stage when we're not either talking down to them or treating them like kids, but we're also making sure that they're not exposed to material that they shouldn't be exposed to," said Ann O'Leary, vice president of global policy at OpenAI.

OpenAI does not verify users' ages directly but uses age assurance technology to estimate whether someone is under 18 based on factors such as their types of queries. If someone is identified or identifies themselves as a minor, they are automatically placed into the teen version. This approach is similar to Meta's strategy with teen accounts on Instagram, which have stricter content, chat, and privacy restrictions than regular accounts.

How Does the Homework Help Feature Actually Work?

One of the key differentiators of ChatGPT for Teens is its approach to academic support. Rather than enabling cheating by providing essay answers or homework solutions, the chatbot is designed to help students engage with material more deeply.

"We continue to also invest in expanding interactive learning because research shows that people learn more effectively when they actively engage and struggle with concepts," explained Allison Mishkin, head of child development at OpenAI.

This design philosophy reflects broader research on learning science, which shows that students retain information better when they work through problems themselves rather than receiving ready-made answers. OpenAI already offers a version of ChatGPT for teachers, and tailoring the model to help kids with studying could give the company additional pathways to bring its product into schools.

The parental controls feature allows parents with linked teen accounts to receive notifications in limited high-risk situations, such as when a user may be at risk of hurting themselves. OpenAI stated that it is "adding additional notifications related to eating disorders, while limiting what is shared and focusing on moments when offline support may matter most".

As AI becomes increasingly woven into teenagers' daily lives, OpenAI's approach to building age-appropriate safeguards may set a template for how other AI companies handle younger users. The launch reflects a broader industry recognition that one-size-fits-all AI tools are not appropriate for developing minds.
