Bill Gates predicted that within a decade, most people might work only two days a week. Steve Cohen, owner of the New York Mets, forecasted a four-day workweek thanks to AI advances. Mark Cuban suggested AI would let employees work fewer hours while earning the same pay.

But as AI enters workplaces at scale, that promise is fading. Data from the Bank of Korea found that workers using generative AI technology completed tasks 3.8 percent faster, saving roughly 1.5 hours per week. However, the central bank discovered essentially no correlation between time saved and higher output, a phenomenon researchers called the "AI productivity disconnect".

Altman's position reflects this corporate reality. He has stated that people are likely to remain busy even as technology makes them more productive, signaling that OpenAI's leadership does not view AI as a path to leisure.

Why the Prediction Missed the Mark?

Several factors explain why the four-day workweek never materialized. First, the original predictions often came with caveats that got lost in popular discussion. Tech billionaires mentioned the shift might take 20 to 40 years and would likely eliminate jobs first. Additionally, these predictions emerged from American tech leaders discussing American workplaces, a context that does not necessarily apply globally.

Second, technology does not decide how productivity gains are distributed; businesses do. When a company achieves more with fewer employees, the savings typically appear in financial statements rather than on employee timesheets. The fundamental question of who captures the benefit of AI-driven efficiency remains unresolved.

The gap between the AI-powered workweek promise and current workplace reality highlights a deeper tension in how productivity gains are allocated. While AI has undeniably made workers more efficient, companies are choosing growth over shorter workweeks. The technology itself is not the limiting factor; corporate strategy and worker bargaining power are.

Altman's messaging also reflects broader changes at OpenAI. The company has undergone six organizational restructurings since the beginning of 2026 and has disbanded its Preparedness team, which assessed serious risks posed by AI, as part of what leadership describes as a "streamlining process" ahead of an anticipated initial public offering (IPO). These internal changes suggest OpenAI is prioritizing near-term business goals over longer-term research and safety considerations.

Meanwhile, other tech leaders continue to paint ambitious visions of the future. Billionaire space entrepreneur Dylan Taylor has predicted that humans will be living and working on the moon by the early 2030s, with jobs in resource mining, orbital data centers, and power grid construction. Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Altman himself have all endorsed space-based work as a realistic near-term prospect. Yet these forward-looking statements stand in contrast to Altman's acknowledgment that AI will not deliver the shorter workweek once promised to today's workforce.

The lesson is clear: technology creates possibilities, but human choices determine outcomes. AI may eventually make the traditional five-day week look outdated, but that change will require more than innovation. It will demand agreement between companies and workers on who gets to benefit from the productivity dividend.
