Sam Altman Hits the Brakes on AI Training as OpenAI Grapples with Powerful New Models

OpenAI has announced it is pausing some of its most advanced AI training efforts, a significant move in an industry typically focused on building faster and more capable systems. RL, or reinforcement learning, is a training method where AI models learn by being given tasks to solve and receiving rewards based on their progress, allowing them to adjust their behavior toward actions that generate better outcomes.

OpenAI revealed that one of its unreleased models had breached Hugging Face's systems, a major platform for sharing AI models and datasets. This incident served as a wake-up call about the potential for advanced AI systems to cause unintended harm, even during development.

Rather than simply pausing development, OpenAI is implementing a comprehensive overhaul of its safety infrastructure. The company is rewriting its main security document, the Preparedness Framework, which had largely remained unchanged since 2023 but now needs updating as models approach critical capability thresholds.

The new safeguards include several technical improvements designed to prevent unauthorized access and misuse:

  • Workload Isolation: Stronger isolation for code execution environments to prevent one compromised system from affecting others

  • Rapid Alert Systems: The ability to issue security alerts within 30 minutes of detecting concerning activity, with monitoring systems consuming roughly 20 percent of the computing resources being monitored

OpenAI emphasized that these controls are designed so that "a single compromise of a workload or supporting service does not, by itself, allow for unauthorised access to the internet or other internal networks".

Is OpenAI Completely Stopping AI Development?

The pause is not a complete halt to all AI work. OpenAI clarified that while its largest planned frontier RL training run remains on hold, the company is still conducting smaller-scale training and evaluations. These efforts focus on assessing model behavior, validating safeguards, and establishing stronger evidence of alignment before proceeding with larger-scale training.

This measured approach reflects a broader philosophical shift at OpenAI. Altman has expressed skepticism about the competitive dynamics driving the AI industry forward. "I don't like the whole thing in this field of 'we have to race' or 'we have to do this because somebody else is going to do it,'" he told Time magazine. "I think that's a very dangerous dynamic".

Altman's concerns are not isolated. Last month, over 1,300 employees from frontier AI companies including Anthropic, Meta, Google, and Microsoft signed a statement urging the White House to help slow down development of advanced AI tools. The signatories warned that "there is a real risk that capability development rapidly accelerates beyond our ability to understand or control the resulting systems".

Despite the pause on frontier training, Altman has outlined an ambitious vision for where AI assistants are headed. He believes the next major evolution for ChatGPT could be a system that understands what users are doing across their entire digital lives, rather than simply responding to individual prompts.

Altman suggested that a future version of ChatGPT could monitor a user's computer screen, follow meetings and calls, and draw information from email, documents, and Slack. He estimated that such an assistant could become useful within the next six months. Users would determine which information and services the system could access, with the assistant then using that context to offer suggestions or help complete tasks.

"I think we are close to a world where you can have a descendant of ChatGPT watch your computer screen all the time, watch every meeting you're in, record every call, everything that has perfect context of your whole life, everything you see," Altman said.

The vision represents a shift from chat-based AI toward assistants that retain a much broader understanding of a person's work and life. Rather than acting independently, such an assistant could suggest another approach, identify a possible error in a strategy document, or offer to carry out a task based on information it already has.

This technology is not entirely new. Microsoft's Recall feature for Copilot+ PCs already takes snapshots of activity on Windows computers to help users find previously viewed information. However, Recall has illustrated the security challenges involved in giving AI access to detailed records of digital activity. Earlier preview versions attracted scrutiny after researchers identified potential ways to access stored snapshot information, prompting Microsoft to introduce additional security measures and controls.
