Sam Altman Named to TIME's 100 AI Influencers as OpenAI Pursues IPO Strategy

Sam Altman, Mark Chen, and Greg Brockman of OpenAI have been recognized on TIME's 2026 list of 100 AI influencers, highlighting their leadership as the company navigates competitive pressures and prepares for a planned 2027 public offering. The recognition underscores OpenAI's continued prominence in the artificial intelligence sector, even as rivals like Anthropic gain ground in valuation and revenue.

What Does OpenAI's TIME Recognition Mean for Its IPO Plans?

The inclusion of Altman, Chen, and Brockman in TIME's Leaders category reflects their roles in steering OpenAI through a critical period. Altman remains the company's CEO and public face, Chen oversees research operations, and Brockman runs major business functions. TIME's senior editor Ayesha Javed and her team selected the trio specifically for their work to help OpenAI "regain momentum against rivals while pursuing advanced AI models, personal assistants, new chips, data centers and consumer devices".

The timing of this recognition is significant given OpenAI's planned 2027 IPO. The company faces pressure to justify its $852 billion valuation, particularly as some key metrics lag behind Anthropic, which is also preparing for public markets. OpenAI's leadership team is actively pursuing multiple revenue streams and product lines to strengthen its competitive position ahead of the listing.

How Is OpenAI Monetizing Its User Base Ahead of Going Public?

OpenAI is rolling out advertisements on ChatGPT across multiple markets as part of its monetization strategy. The company has launched ads on select ChatGPT plans in India, one of its largest and most active markets, targeting free users and those on lower-cost subscription tiers like the 399 rupee (approximately $4) per month "Go" plan. The ad feature is already live in 38 countries, including the United States, Japan, Korea, and across 31 European nations.

An OpenAI spokesperson explained that advertising would support "broader access to ChatGPT through free and lower-cost tiers" while protecting user experience. The company has committed to clearly labeling ads, keeping them visually separate from responses, and displaying them below the response text. Importantly, OpenAI stated that "answer independence is non-negotiable," meaning the chatbot's responses will not be influenced by third-party product placements.

  • Ad Rollout Timeline: Managed ads are now live in India, with self-serve advertising launching on September 4, allowing advertisers to directly bid for ad impressions on the platform
  • User Protection Measures: OpenAI does not show ads to users who identify as, or are predicted by the algorithm to be, under 18 years old
  • Market Strategy: Unlike rival Anthropic, which derives a higher share of revenue from enterprise customers, OpenAI relies more heavily on individual consumers, making the ad model an effective monetization approach at scale

Industry analysts note that OpenAI faces competitive pressure from multiple directions. Anthropic has overtaken OpenAI in valuation and revenue, driven in part by the success of Claude and Claude Code, while Google maintains dominance in consumer search and advertising. Ujjwal Chaudhry, a partner at market intelligence firm Analysys Mason, noted that online ads account for more than 75 percent of total global ad spending worth $1.18 trillion, with in-app advertisements representing a $400 billion market.

Anthropic has publicly criticized OpenAI's advertising plans, insisting that its Claude chatbot will remain ad-free. The company has stated that users will not see ads or sponsored links near their conversations, and that the chatbot's answers will not be influenced by third-party product placements.

Who Else Made TIME's 2026 AI Influencers List?

Beyond OpenAI's leadership, TIME recognized a diverse group of AI influencers across four categories: Leaders, Innovators, Shapers, and Thinkers. In the Leaders category, Elon Musk of SpaceX was recognized for expanding his AI ambitions through the merger of xAI with SpaceX, taking the combined company public, and pushing ahead with new AI models and major investments in AI infrastructure and software. Dario and Daniela Amodei of Anthropic were also recognized as their company has overtaken OpenAI in valuation and revenue.

Other notable Leaders include Google DeepMind's Lila Ibrahim, ByteDance CEO Liang Rubo, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan, Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman, Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi, CoreWeave CEO Michael Intrator, and SMIC co-CEO Liang Mong Song. The Innovators category highlighted figures like Ben Affleck, who founded InterPositive, a company that developed AI models based on filmmakers' own content to improve postproduction. Netflix acquired InterPositive in March for a reported $587 million, with Affleck joining Netflix as a senior adviser.

The Shapers category included Paris Hilton, recognized for her advocacy against deepfakes, and Bernie Sanders, included for his criticism of AI's potential effects on jobs and society. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, co-founder of the Creators Coalition on AI, was recognized for advocating protections and shared standards for creative workers as AI becomes more widely used in entertainment. The Thinkers category brought together researchers and academics, including Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and chief scientist of Safe Superintelligence, recognized for his work on developing AI with a strong focus on safety.

TIME said the expansion of its TIME100 AI coverage reflects the growing importance of AI in everyday life and the need to examine both its potential and risks. The magazine plans to expand its AI reporting team, relaunch its AI newsletter, and launch its first TIME100 AI Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C., next year.
