The Noise Crisis Nobody Expected: How xAI's Data Centers Are Becoming a Public Health Problem
Elon Musk's xAI data center campus, which powers the Grok artificial intelligence chatbot, is creating a persistent noise pollution problem for nearby residents that current regulations are ill-equipped to address. The sprawling facility near the Memphis-Mississippi border operates roughly 60 to 70 gas turbines that run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, producing a constant low-frequency hum that penetrates homes and causes sleep disruption, stress, and potential long-term health effects. As xAI plans to expand its compute capacity and replicate this model across industry-friendly states, experts warn that noise pollution from data centers represents an emerging public health threat that few communities are prepared to manage.
Why Is Data Center Noise Different From Other Industrial Sound?
The turbines at xAI's Colossus 1 data center are designed like jet engines and never shut down. For Jason Haley, a resident in Southaven, Mississippi, just over the state line from the facility, the experience has been transformative. "It's 24/7," Haley explained. "People will say it's like white noise. It's not. It's a feeling." He no longer enjoys his backyard, experiences sleep deprivation, and has developed ringing in his ears.
The challenge with measuring and regulating data center noise stems from how sound is currently assessed. For decades, the standard metric has been the A-weighted decibel (dBA) level, which measures volume as perceived by the human ear. However, this single metric misses critical information about sound patterns, duration, and frequency ranges. A pedal harp, a chatty office, and a gas-powered leaf blower can all register at 80 decibels, yet they produce vastly different health impacts.

"It cannot be shut out by closing doors and windows, and so when people hear it in their home, they're not able to get away from it. It's inescapable," Banks noted.
What Are the Health Consequences of Constant Data Center Noise?
The health impacts of persistent noise pollution extend far beyond simple annoyance. Research shows that noise affects the body and brain even during sleep, when people may not consciously realize they are responding to their environment. Dr. Mathias Basner, a researcher and professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, has conducted laboratory studies in which participants are exposed to noise while sleeping. "Our whole sensory array is still monitoring the environment, and the most important long-term sensor is our hearing," Basner explained. "It's a stress to the body, but we are unaware of that. That is the big problem".
During these studies, participants experience brief awakenings accompanied by increases in blood pressure and heart rate, yet they have no memory of waking the next morning. With sustained exposure, noise pollution can lead to serious health consequences:

In August 2026, Musk announced that xAI would expand to 20 gigawatts of compute power, fed primarily by "the power plant." Last month, xAI said it would remove its collection of temporary turbines within one year after finishing construction of approximately 40 permanent turbines that are supposedly quieter. However, residents like Haley remain skeptical. "I was told I think in November that the noise would be getting better in a week. And here we are. It hasn't gotten any better," Haley said. He filed a citizen lawsuit against the SpaceX-owned company in June.
The xAI model is not remaining isolated to Memphis. The facility was initially singular for its power capacity of around 2 gigawatts and its method of on-site gas generation, but dozens of similar projects are planned in industry-friendly states across the coming years. This expansion means the noise pollution problem will likely spread to new communities with little public awareness or regulatory infrastructure in place.
Unlike airports, which typically have curfews from about 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., data centers operate continuously with no respite for neighbors. This constant exposure distinguishes data center noise from other industrial sources and makes mitigation significantly more challenging.
What Can Communities Do to Protect Residents?
Addressing data center noise pollution requires action at multiple levels. Current regulatory frameworks are inadequate because they rely on outdated measurement standards that do not capture the full spectrum of harm. Communities facing data center expansion can take several steps to protect public health:
- Demand supplemental metrics: Advocate for local and state regulations that go beyond A-weighted decibels to measure low-frequency noise, duration patterns, and cumulative exposure over time.
