The university has already been transforming how it teaches and assesses students to account for AI's growing role in the workplace. Its approach includes a two-lane assessment system that allows students to demonstrate knowledge in secure, supervised settings while also showing they can use AI effectively and responsibly in open, unsupervised assessments.

How Will the University Integrate ChatGPT Into Learning?

• Collaboration Support: ChatGPT Edu will enable easier collaboration in group learning activities, helping students brainstorm and develop ideas together more effectively.
• Advanced Analysis: Students can use the tool to undertake complex information analysis and ask nuanced questions that deepen their understanding of course material.
• AI Literacy Building: Free access ensures all students can develop practical skills in using AI responsibly, a capability increasingly expected in modern workplaces.
• Complementary Learning: ChatGPT Edu will work alongside the university's own award-winning AI education platform, Cogniti, which remains the preferred tool for classroom instruction and provides 24/7 personalized tutoring and feedback.

The university emphasized that ChatGPT Edu will supplement, not replace, its existing AI tools. Cogniti, which puts teachers in control and supports personalized learning through tutoring, feedback, and role-play scenarios, will remain the primary platform for educators in the classroom.

What Is the University Doing About AI's Environmental Impact?

Beyond access initiatives, the University of Sydney is tackling a critical but often overlooked challenge: the environmental footprint of AI systems. The university is establishing an AI Sustainability Research and Innovation Fund with $1 million in investment to leverage its multidisciplinary research expertise and build evidence, methodologies, and innovations needed to better understand, measure, and reduce AI's environmental impacts.

This research effort will be supported by advanced computing infrastructure, including the university's newest high-performance computing platform called Apollo. Researchers across engineering, science, medicine and health, business, law, social sciences, and the Conservatorium of Music will use these resources to drive AI-powered discovery while studying the sustainability implications of their work.
