The company recently denied rumors that it has abandoned its Full Self-Driving push in the world's largest EV market, stating that its Shanghai data center is "operating normally" and that recruitment for driver-assistance roles is "accelerating".

The denial comes after speculation circulated on Chinese social media that Tesla had withdrawn its FSD team from China and eliminated related positions. Tesla responded aggressively, even reporting the rumors to police, a move that signals how sensitive the company is about any suggestion that its China autonomy effort has stalled.

However, the denial raises more questions than it answers. China does not appear on Tesla's updated list of 12 markets where FSD (Supervised) subscriptions are offered, despite Tesla's US website still listing China as a market where the system is "available for use." This contradiction has persisted throughout 2026, with Tesla announcing FSD availability in China in May, then renaming it "Tesla Assisted Driving" on its Chinese site without publishing pricing or a clear rollout timeline.

Meanwhile, Chinese automakers including Xiaomi and Huawei are rapidly expanding their own urban driver-assistance features, and Xpeng is preparing to launch an upgraded version of its Level 2 system that is already competitive with Tesla's offering in China.
