Waymo is preparing to launch a fully autonomous commercial ride-hailing service in Tokyo in 2027, partnering with Japanese taxi operator Nihon Kotsu and mobility platform GO. The move marks a significant test of whether the Alphabet-owned company's robotaxi dominance in the United States can succeed in a fundamentally different market with dense urban streets, narrow roads, and established transportation networks.
The announcement comes as Waymo accelerates its domestic expansion at an unprecedented pace. The company now provides more than half a million autonomous trips each week across 15 U.S. cities, with recent launches in Denver, San Diego, Tampa, and Las Vegas. By early September, Waymo had deployed more than 4,000 autonomous vehicles, including about 300 of its newer Ojai minivans designed specifically for robotaxi operations.
