Why Is Argentina Suddenly Attractive to Big Tech?

Two years ago, Argentina was largely overlooked by major technology investors. That changed dramatically when President Javier Milei took office in December 2023 and implemented economic reforms that stabilized the country's historically volatile inflation. His administration introduced the RIGI incentive regime, which provides tax breaks and regulatory stability to attract foreign investment in sectors like energy and mining.

In May 2024, Milei traveled to Silicon Valley to personally court major tech leaders. During that trip, he met with Apple's then-CEO Tim Cook, OpenAI's Sam Altman, Google's Sundar Pichai, and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg to encourage investment in Argentina, particularly in Patagonia. The visit signaled a dramatic shift in how the country was perceived internationally.

What Makes Patagonia Ideal for Data Centers?

Patagonia, located at South America's southern tip, offers a unique combination of natural advantages. The region features jagged mountain peaks, desert landscapes, and massive glaciers that create a naturally cool climate, significantly reducing the energy needed to cool server equipment. Beyond climate, the area sits atop Vaca Muerta, one of the world's largest shale gas formations, providing abundant energy resources.

Unlike the United States, where data center projects face fierce public opposition over power grid strain and environmental concerns, Argentina has experienced minimal backlash. The country lacks the organized anti-data-center campaigns seen in other nations because large-scale server farms have not yet impacted local communities.

In Neuquen province, electricity generator Pampa Energia is developing a data center that would consume up to 500 megawatts of energy from Vaca Muerta. The company began studying the project after receiving inquiries at the beginning of 2026 and aims to reach initial agreements by the end of that year.

OpenAI announced in October 2025 that it would partner with local company Sur Energy on a data center powered by clean energy, with a projected cost of up to $25 billion and capacity of up to 500 megawatts. Meanwhile, Google is constructing a data center in neighboring Uruguay, and Amazon is moving ahead on a mega data center in Chile, indicating that major hyperscalers across the region are pursuing expansion strategies.

Additional projects include FlexDomes, a U.S.-based green data center company, which is seeking investors for a Neuquen facility with a first stage of 120 megawatts of IT load costing $1.4 billion. In Chubut province, Poland-based Green Capital announced plans for a data center that would initially reach 300 megawatts at a cost of $3 billion, with potential expansion to 3,000 megawatts.

How to Evaluate Argentina's Data Center Potential?

While interest in Argentina's data center opportunities is genuine, experts caution that announcements do not guarantee project completion. Several factors will determine whether these initiatives move from planning to operational facilities.

  • Political Stability: Investors are watching Argentina's 2027 presidential election closely, with some waiting to see if Milei's proposed Super RIGI framework passes, which would offer even larger tax cuts and regulatory certainty.
  • Infrastructure Development: Connectivity and power infrastructure remain significant hurdles; Argentina currently has only small data centers concentrated in Buenos Aires and lacks the fiber-optic cable capacity that Patagonia needs.
  • Project Financing: Most investors prefer to start with smaller pilot projects of 20 to 40 megawatts before committing to full-scale 500-megawatt facilities, requiring phased investment approaches.
  • Local Partnerships: Success depends on establishing relationships with local energy providers and government agencies; Pampa Energia is quoting energy prices to interested parties and expects to finalize agreements by late 2026.

In July 2026, Argentina's communications agency announced plans to create a second fiber-optic cable landing station to make Patagonia more accessible to data center operators, addressing one of the region's key infrastructure gaps. However, experts emphasize that having power and land is insufficient; the necessary infrastructure must actually be built before projects can launch.

The convergence of Milei's economic reforms, Patagonia's natural advantages, and global demand for AI computing power has positioned Argentina as an emerging player in the hyperscaler competition. Whether these early-stage projects materialize into operational facilities will depend on political continuity, infrastructure investment, and the willingness of major tech companies to take calculated risks in a region that, until recently, was largely overlooked by Silicon Valley.
