Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is calling on technology leaders to ensure artificial intelligence benefits extend far beyond tech companies to farmers, small businesses, and rural communities across India. Speaking at the Ideas4India forum in Seattle on September 17, Nadella emphasized that a general-purpose technology like AI will only fulfill its promise if people across all sectors and regions can both use it and help shape its development.

Why Should AI Benefits Reach Beyond Tech Companies?

Nadella illustrated his vision with a concrete example he had witnessed in Delhi. An Indian developer combined a large language model (LLM), a type of AI trained on vast amounts of text, with language services to help a rural farmer access government information through WhatsApp. The system allowed the farmer to ask questions in a local language and explained how to access a subsidy and complete the required paperwork. For Nadella, this demonstration showed how AI could give ordinary people greater ability to obtain government entitlements and services they were entitled to receive.

The Seattle gathering brought together more than 40 Indian-origin chief executives and chief technology officers from companies working across multiple sectors. These leaders represented expertise in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, semiconductors, aerospace, cloud infrastructure, and enterprise software. Their discussions centered on how to connect the expertise of Indian Americans in the tech diaspora with India's ambitions in emerging technologies.

What Does India's AI Opportunity Require?

Nadella stressed that India's AI opportunity must involve more than catching up with existing global technology trends. Instead, he argued that India should identify its own competitive advantages in an era of increasingly abundant artificial intelligence and turn those advantages into products and services with global reach. This shift requires rethinking how professionals develop their skills as AI changes the nature of work itself.

To illustrate the scale of adjustment needed, Nadella asked his audience to imagine moving from an early-1980s workplace into the late 1990s. Preparing a business forecast before widespread email, spreadsheets, and digital documents was fundamentally different from doing it afterward. The same principle applies now as AI reshapes how tasks are performed and results are evaluated.

Nadella also emphasized that countries and companies must retain control over their knowledge and technological development. He argued that participation in AI development should allow countries and businesses to feel secure without becoming dependent on another entity's technological frontier.

How to Build India's AI Ecosystem Across Sectors

• Infrastructure Investment: Microsoft announced a $17.5 billion investment in India between 2026 and 2029 for cloud and AI infrastructure, skills development, and operations, described as the company's largest investment in Asia.
• Developer Community Growth: Nadella said India's growing pool of technology professionals could help the country develop the world's largest developer community within the next four years, praising what he called the "ingenuity of the human capital in India".
• Sector-Wide Cooperation: Participants at the forum proposed cooperation across data centers and AI infrastructure, chip design and manufacturing, quantum research, talent development, and advanced manufacturing.
• Sovereign Technological Capabilities: Microsoft intends to contribute to the infrastructure, skills, and sovereign technological capabilities required as India develops an AI-focused economy.

India's Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, placed practical development needs at the center of the discussion. He noted that AI adoption in India would depend on useful outcomes and on what society and infrastructure could support.

Kwatra reaffirmed India's commitment to an AI mission anchored in inclusivity, openness, sovereignty, democratized access, safety, and trust. The Seattle forum followed the India AI Impact Summit 2026 and served as a follow-up to discuss deeper cooperation between Indian American technology leaders and India's strategic technology ambitions.

The corporate commitments backing these discussions are substantial. Amazon announced plans to invest $48 billion in India from 2026 to 2030, including expansion of AWS data center capacity in Mumbai and Hyderabad. Costco is setting up its first Global Capability Centre in Hyderabad. Several companies represented at the Seattle forum already maintain engineering, research, and business operations in India, providing an established foundation for further collaboration.

Organizers indicated that the Seattle gathering could become an ongoing channel for technology cooperation between the two countries. This work could also feed into the India-US TRUST initiative, which stands for Transforming the Relationship Utilizing Strategic Technology. The initiative envisions collaboration across artificial intelligence, quantum technology, semiconductors, space, telecommunications, and biotechnology, including joint development and production.
