OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Ads in India, Targeting 100 Million Weekly Users

OpenAI is bringing advertisements to ChatGPT in India, extending an ad-supported revenue model to one of the chatbot's biggest markets outside the United States. Starting this week, logged-in users aged 18 and above on ChatGPT's free version and the Go plan (priced at Rs 399 per month, roughly $5 USD) will see sponsored products and services displayed below chatbot responses. The company is positioning ads as a key revenue stream ahead of a planned initial public offering.

How Does OpenAI's Ad Model Protect User Privacy?

OpenAI has implemented several safeguards to address privacy concerns around the ad program. The company stated that advertisers will not receive access to users' conversations, chat history, saved memories, or other personal information. Instead, advertisers will only see aggregated campaign metrics, including impressions and clicks. Additionally, ads will be automatically blocked for accounts identified as belonging to minors or users who have stated they are below 18 years old.

The company also excludes advertisements from responses involving sensitive or regulated subjects. This protective approach includes:

  • Health and Mental Health: Ads are blocked from responses discussing medical conditions, treatments, or mental health topics.
  • Political Content: Advertisements do not appear alongside political discussions or election-related responses.
  • User Data Protection: OpenAI does not sell individual user data and provides only aggregated metrics to advertisers.
  • Age Verification: Accounts identified as belonging to minors are automatically excluded from ad targeting.

Why Is India Such a Critical Market for OpenAI?

India represents OpenAI's second-largest market globally, with more than 100 million weekly users as of February 2026. ChatGPT crossed one billion weekly users worldwide earlier this month, making India's user base particularly valuable for monetization efforts. The India expansion comes as OpenAI seeks to build new income streams ahead of its proposed initial public offering.

The rollout follows a successful pilot in the United States, which launched in February 2026. That US trial reportedly crossed $100 million in annualized revenue within six weeks, demonstrating strong advertiser demand. Following the US success, OpenAI expanded the ad program to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. Last week, the company rolled out ChatGPT Ads in 31 European countries, including Germany, France, Spain, and Italy.

What Does the Ad Program Look Like for Indian Advertisers?

More than 50 brands are expected to begin advertising on ChatGPT this week in India. OpenAI plans to make its self-service ChatGPT Ads Manager available to Indian businesses starting September 4, allowing advertisers to launch campaigns with daily budgets beginning at Rs 725, roughly $9 USD. This low entry point is designed to attract small and medium-sized businesses in India, where digital advertising budgets are often more constrained than in Western markets.

The ad placement strategy is straightforward: sponsored products and services will appear directly below ChatGPT's responses and will be distinctly marked as advertisements to maintain transparency. This approach mirrors the US model, which has proven effective at generating revenue without significantly disrupting user experience.

OpenAI's India expansion represents a critical test of its global ad monetization strategy. By targeting one of the world's largest and fastest-growing internet user bases, the company is positioning itself to capture advertising revenue from a market where digital services are increasingly central to daily life. The success of this rollout could influence how aggressively OpenAI pursues ad-supported models in other emerging markets and shape the company's path to profitability as it prepares for a public market debut.
